The Best Places to Find Vinyl Records – Yard Sales

Number one on my list is “Yard Sales”. Even though it is somewhat rare to find folks with vinyl records for sale, they are still out there. My favorite scenario is when I see a turntable or other vintage pieces of stereo equipment for sale such as a receiver or speakers. Once I have spotted these I will always ask “any chance you folks have some vinyl records for sale”? I cannot tell you how many times people will say, yes, I’ve got a box in my closet, but they’re heavy or yes, let me go get them.

The reason that I like sales where they are selling the turntable is that it tells me they are finished with vinyl records, in other words they are getting out of the business and in my experience, they are willing to accept any “reasonable” offer.

The other scenario is when a family member or close friend has inherited a collection of vinyl records and doesn’t know or care anything about them, they are usually just interested in getting rid of them but not always. Sometimes you get people who have inherited a collection or have bought them in a storage locker, and they think they have a goldmine, not much you can do or say to these folks, they believe that the Beatles album that they have “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is rare and worth hundreds of dollars. The tricky thing to explain is that it’s like a lottery ticket, some are worth hundreds and thousands of dollars, but most aren’t, and to boot they sold over thirty-two million copies (32,000,000) of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and chances are good that your copy is worth about $5 -$20, depending upon condition.
